In-Flight Transmission of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2

HKU SPH researchers together with colleagues from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, Hong Kong Department of Health, Public Health England, and National Institute for Medical Research, Mwanza, Tanzania have published their report on an observation of in-flight transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in Emerging Infectious Diseases. This observation was based on the four persons with SARS-CoV-2 infection, who had traveled on the same flight from Boston, Massachusetts, USA, to Hong Kong, China. Researchers found that the near full-length viral genomes from all four patients (two passengers and two flight attendants) were 100% identical and phylogenetically grouped to clade G, and this virus genetic sequences were not previously identified in Hong Kong. However, no other COVID-19 cases associated with this flight have been identified. The virus attack rate on that flight was still unclear on this flight because not all passengers were tested.
