Mendelian randomisation study investigates the link between type 2 diabetes and its risk factors and COVID-19

HKU SPH researchers have investigated the potential association of poorer glycaemic traits and type 2 diabetes with COVID-19 risk to determine if the links observed in observational studies are causal. In the study published in BMC Medicine, Dr Au Yeung and colleagues assessed the association using 2-sample Mendelian randomization method, which uses genetic information linked to glycaemic traits and type 2 diabetes as proxies to allow the results to be interpreted as a causal link. Their results suggest that type 2 diabetes and their risk factors are unlikely to increase the risk of contracting COVID-19.
