Effects of travel restrictions on local transmission of COVID-19 might differ in various settings and should be evaluated more carefully

HKU SPH researchers collaborated with scholars at LSHTM to publish a modelling study in the Lancet Public Health to investigate the extent to which imported cases contribute to local transmission under different epidemic conditions. Authors evaluated the effect of travel restrictions on COVID-19 containment and estimated the risk of case importation across 162 countries. They found that the effect of travel controls might vary in different settings, and countries should consider local COVID-19 incidence, local epidemic growth, and travel volumes before implementing such restrictions on inbound travelers.
